Ok, First time we are all startups and want to see the Net as the place to get lots of free stuffs.  In the same way we start to build a website with free templates.  Yes, it is true that there are lots of REALLY free templates.  Yes, i am shouting here because, free templates are different types.

Some are REALLY free where you dont pay anything and dont even give link back to them.  Some generous template designers allow it.  They generally say that these are free templates and mostly some of them do not have license on it.

And there are some free templates people give with link back.  It means you will be running a website with their template and you will be giving a link back to their original site.  The advantage is that they are getting good PR by doing it.  Well PR is nothing but page rank thing from Google.

And there are some licenses like CC (creative common) where you need to credit the original author to use the template if you are modifying and using it in your site.  The fact i believe is that most of the CC templates are really cool ones.  If you check with google for some free creative common license web templates you will see the best ones with zero price tag.

Now, GPL.  General public license templates are mostly available in net with the same cost zero.  The thing is GPL means freedom and not free of cost.  It means that you can use any GPL template and modify it and you can sell it too.  However you need to release the product in same GPL license.  Well, i think i am deviating here in using a free template.

So, while you search net for free templates , search for GPL web templates, CC web templates  rather than typing free templates.

Another thing is that most people who are starting the web search only for HTML templates.  Well, it is true that Joomla, Wordpress or Drupal templates mostly GPL and you can even use them as HTML templates if you want.  Because, they are basically (x)html only.
